We have had a very busy week this week in Reception fo rthe last week of half term. Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday and the childaren learnted all about the traditions that this entails.
We made our Lent Promises this week in preparation for Lent. We then hung them on the Lentern Tree to remind us as we journey through Lent. Father Kelly visited us to administer our ashes to help us prepare for lent and learn about the importance of Ash Wednesday.
We have also been learning about Valentines day and celebrating this by making our own Valentines cards and colouring them in to give to our loved ones.
Of course, not to forget another celebration - it is Chinese New Year. To celebrate the Year of the Dog, the children have learned about the mythical beast Nian and how the ancient Chinese people protected themselves from this beast and why each chinese year is named after a different animal.
This week the children in reception have been learning how to compare different capacities in maths. They have been learning new vocabulary to describe if a cup is full, half full or empty .
The cups were filled with 'dinosaur bones' and the children also had to decide whether their cup had more or less in than their friends.
The children have been very busy creating a volcano as the centre piece of a wall display to showcase their fantastic writing skills . We have been reading Dinosaur Stomp and learning about verbs - words to describe actions - to describe how a dinosaur moves. They have been role playing - stomping, charging , swishing, and gliding as dinosaurs. They then wrote about their own dinosaur..."Down in the jungle, what will a see? I see a t-rex leaping at me!"
