The children have been working really hard on their understanding and confidence in maths in Year 1. We have started a new style of teaching and learning called 'Singapore Maths'. With its emphasis on teaching pupils to solve problems, share ideas and explain their reasoning, Singapore Maths teaching is a really creative and forward thinking way of looking at numeracy. We are really lucky to be able to use this innovative scheme at St Kentigern's!
Each lesson has a real emphasis on practical manipulation of apparatus so that the children really understand what they are doing and get a sense of the number value. These concrete (real life objects) are accompanied by pictorial apparatus (pictures) and then we move on to more abstract ideas such as written problems and workbook activities. The children each have their own maths pack and it has been wonderful to see how their independence in using this equipment has improved over time. At the moment we are looking at number ordering, counting and comparing more and less. We have also practised writing numbers in words and as numerals! Well done children keep up the hard work!
