It’s been another busy week for Y2M – we immersed ourselves in the work of Vincent van Gogh, learning about the artist’s works and influence. The children then took what they learned about the artist’s impressionist style and applied this to their Topic work – creating oil pastel paintings of St Lucia landscapes.
We used a variety of techniques to create depth and a sense of movement in the artwork, layering the oil pastels and experimenting with application.
Our next step will be using iPads and apps to create digital artworks of St Lucia, enabling the children to become familiar with a variety of creation tools.
,We looked at the work of artist Arcimboldo and practised using the collage technique. The children had to create portraits using fruit and vegetable prints. The layering of materials gave the portraits texture and depth, and the children enjoyed experimenting with the different fruits and vegetables to create facial features. It was lovely to see the children's creativity in action.
Everyday after lunch, Y2M has twenty minutes of reading time. The class is split into five groups. The children carry out independent reading, guided reading with the teacher or teaching assistant, or an activity based on the book they are reading with their group. This 'reading time' relaxes the children and helps to improve their reading and writing skills.
