5TM has hosted a whole range of guests this week including: drama teachers; musicians; creative events organisers; actors and much more. The questions posed by the class really challenged our visitors at times as we probed to see why entering into a creative industry can be so exciting. I'm sure, after this Creative Aspirations Week, we'll be seeing some creative minds from St. Kentigern's in the future!
The weather was kind to Year 5 on Monday as we enjoyed a fun-filled day investigating the environmental and industrial impact of the River Medlock on the local area. Students had the opportunity to walk along the river and see how it was used to power the local ironworks during the Industrial Era and then we looked in the river itself to see the impact this has had on the course and wildlife.
In our new Science topic 'Space', students investigated the distance between the planets in our solar system and were surprised to see how far apart planets such as Uranus and Neptune were away from our lovely own planet Earth. We also learnt the phrase 'my very elegant mother served up nachos' to remember the names of all the planets.
This week we started our new R.E topic titled 'Freedom and Responsibility.' 5TM took part in role play activity where children left home without telling their parents where they had gone. We considered the impacts this could have such as the dangers the children may face and how the parents would feel. The drama skills were excellent and descriptions given were very thoughtful.
Things got heated this week in parliament as the Cavaliers and Roundheads put forward their opinions on who should rule the country. Luckily we had two excellent speakers on hand to keep a handle on proceedings but many valid and relevant arguments were made from both sides. In the end, the Roundheads prevailed in this closely fought battle!
This week we have extended our learning about the English Civil and the reign of King Charles I in the time of the Stuarts. The children wrote excellent biographies about this divisive monarch and how he ended being executed by his own parliament for his crimes. We also decided which side we would support between the Roundheads and the Cavaliers and how they differed. To show our learning, we designed propaganda posters trying to persuade people to sign up.
