We place a very high value on the acquisition and mastery of early mathematical skills and concepts. From their very first days in our school, pupils are counting and developing an understanding of number and one to one correspondence. Our approach to maths mastery throughout the school is via a physical representation of a mathematical problem, for example, the sum 2-1 will be accomplished by a child taking one brick away from two. This approach continues, so that pupils in Year 1 and 2 are using practical apparatus to add and subtract hundreds, tens and ones.
From Year 1 to 4, the school uses the ‘Singapore Maths’ scheme. This has been found to be very successful in many countries in raising standards in mathematics. Over the course of the next two years, all pupils from years 1 to 6 will be using this scheme. At the end of 2016, 92% of pupils achieved or exceeded the expected level in Maths, compared to 70% nationally.
